1840's Dress

From the seller:

This is an 1840's medium weight challis dress in shades of beige with a ribbon stripe running through. The top is lined with polished cotton, the bust padded with cotton. The sleeves, hem, which is about 15" deep, and inside waistband are lined with a wonderful blue and white striped cotton. The V-shaped bodice has fan pleats, the skirt is cartridge pleated. The long, narrow sleeve has an interesting asymmetrical cap held in place with a button, it fastens in back with hooks and eyes.
The note, found pinned to the bodice as shown, indicates that it was worn for a wedding, and gives the name of the bride & groom.
The bust is about 33".
In as found condition, the skirt in particular has many holes. The vertical seam at the front of the bodice needs to be resewn, though the lining is in very good condition. The blue inside hem has a few holes and some discoloration, though the 15" hem gives a lot of nice fabric to work with. The side and bodice closeups show the color closest.

From Me:

This is truly a lovely piece.   However, I doubt this was worn as a wedding gown.  It may have been worn at the reception or during the honeymoon instead.
