This auction is for a wonderful ballgown bodice dated to the very earliest years of Victoria's reign. The fabric is a smooth champagne colored silk jacquard trimmed with a contrasting olive silk piping. The split bertha recalls 17th century fashion and the paintings of Velasquez at the Spanish Court. The bertha is trimmed with two rows of silk chenille and at the center is placed a delicate rosette made with a button and double frill of silk. more buttons trim the sleeves. The sleeves are gathered horizontally over the lining, held in place with piped and buttoned tabs. Each is finished off with a double puff. The bodice fastens behind with hooks and thread eyes. Only the top and bottom hook are missing.
Condition is very good. There is underarm discoloration which doesn't distract when displayed. A split in the discoloration under the right arm appears stable. There is some minor light spotting caused by the original vegetable-based dye's aging. This is normal. The light and dark gradations in the photos are caused by the fabric's iridescence.
Measurements are: The bust is 32 inches & the waist measures 26 inches. A great size for display! Please note: Measurements are approximate and should be taken as maximum. The decorations on the sleeves are awesome! The faux fan front is more 1840's but the bodice has elements that look 1830's as well. I'm going with the seller on this and say 1839. :-)
