This piece dates to the 1840’s and is fully sewn by hand, fashioned of a changeable silk with its top fully piped at the seams with a cape style detail running over the shoulders and down both the front and rear with epaulet topped large bell pagoda sleeves all trimmed in velvet piping and purple fringe. Cartridge pleating encircles the waist with a glazed cotton fully lined skirt having a purple wool bound bottom. Small pocket as pictured is on the side waistline, this gown is sold as found, reflective of the condition. Numerous small splits and weakness to the silk are seen from the shoulder down the outside of the sleeve, small wear is seen to the piping, especially around the pocket, the cape trim has come free on either side of the bodice, and the skirt shows mild but present water staining. Wear and weakness is seen to the silk at the hook enclosure, I believe that button trims were removed from the front hook enclosure. Measures 26 inches around the waist, 34 inches around the bust, 57 inches in its front length and the rear slightly longer and a bottom sweep measuring a full 150 inches around.
Vintage clothing is described to its best and sold as found…and described as accurately as possible. The items HAVE NOT been cleaned and should be cleaned prior to wearing at the discretion of the buyer. Often for proper fit, hang, and wear ability, pieces will need to be altered and/or adding a hook or snap here or there, with a seam closure or strengthening needed. Vintage clothing is most often worn previously, and if old stock, often has slight imperfections from storage, a hint of color or odor.
