late 1860's Wedding Gown

A charming 1869 coco brown silk wedding dress that comes from an estate in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont. The note reads “Grandma Mackpam’s wedding dress. The bodice has full pagoda style sleeves and a pleated front. The neck, shoulders and armscyes are piped. The dress is all hand stitched. The bodice and sleeves are lined with green cotton and the dress has a back hook and eye closure. The skirt is unlined except for a band of cotton at the edge of the hemline. The dress is in very good condition. There are a few scattered pencil tip size holes in the skirt, a small line of underarm discoloration and a few scattered dime size and smaller soil marks on the lower skirt front. A wonderful dress with great documentation. Bust 31 Waist 25 Skirt length 40 Width at hemline 98.

My guess is that this was an earlier styled dress that was redone in the fashionable style for the wedding, based on the way the skirt is shaped and the sleeves. Honestly, I'm suspect about the card found with the dress. Yes, the waist is in the higher style fashionable in the late 1860's but everything else about this dress screams late 1850's/early 1860's.
