Men's Civil War (?) Waistcoat

Fancy Civil War Era Men’s Watered Moire Silk Wedding Waist Coat with Rich Hand Embroidery of Oak Leaves and Acorns



This piece dates to the Civil War era, hand sewn throughout, fashioned of a white watered moire silk with high shine, and lavishly hand embroidered with oak leaves and acorns in white and off white silk floss thread in raised detail. The front closes with silk floss covered buttons, polished cotton rear with a buckle back, inner chest padded full. The piece is in new condition, with the flaw being the underarms…one sweaty groom! Yellowed age staining with each underarm having weakness to the the silk in the area of the staining only. The inner leather waistband has seen a minor break and the size was extended a half an inch neatly on either side in the period, the entire piece is pristine otherwise. Measures 38 inches around the chest, 32 inches around the waist, with 21 inches in its length.

This looks more 1850's to me than 1860's. Anyone else think it's earlier? Later?
