1890's Ball Gown in Yellow

Great Vintage early Victorian 1840s Dress

Made of yellow striped silk taffeta

Slim waistline with balloon Georgian Sleeves

Bell skirt with yellow trim

Bodice has inside boning and v shaped décolletage

It closes in the back as a corset with hook and eye closures but if you want to use the larger measurement with the added piece in the back the corset would not close (see measurements)

This dress would have been worn by young Victoria. It is a typical style of dress during her teenage years and reign as Queen of England.

The dress is seemingly made for a very young girl (see measurements), however a piece of yellow silk charmeuse has been added in the back to extend the bust and waist of the dress for a larger figure.



Dress measurements:

Bust – 26”, 32” with the yellow extension

Waist – 20”, 26” with the extension

Length of skirt – 44”

Length of bodice – 15”


Condition: AS IS, the dress displays beautifully but has many places that the silk is shredding. To make silk lustrous during the 19th and earlier centuries the silk was refined using metal salts, these salts act as razor blades and shred the fabric. Since this is taffeta it is more preserved then others but is not in wearable condition. There is shredding under and on top of the sleeves as well as some other areas on the bodice and skirt, although the skirt is in overall good shape for being almost 200 years old. This dress will make a beautiful display piece or study for pattern.

This has machine sewing, the sleeves, and even the skirt shape are all very 1890's.
